QQQ is a passive ETF designed to track the Nasdaq-100 Index, holding roughly the 100 largest nonfinancial companies listed on the Nasdaq. It uses a modified market-cap approach, which naturally concentrates the portfolio in its biggest names and can make it behave very differently from a broad U.S. large-cap fund.
You’re buying a basket of 100 big, well-known Nasdaq-listed companies—mostly growth-oriented businesses, and specifically not banks or other financial firms. Because the biggest companies get the biggest weights, a few top stocks do a lot of the driving.
