VGT is a passive sector ETF built to track the MSCI US IMI Information Technology 25/50 Index, giving market-cap-weighted exposure to U.S. information technology companies across large-, mid-, and small-cap stocks.
It aims to hold (nearly) all index constituents in roughly the same weights, with quarterly rebalancing and built-in concentration limits via the MSCI 25/50 methodology.
The result is broad, plain-vanilla U.S. tech exposure, but still shaped by how GICS defines “technology.
You’re buying a big basket of U.S. technology stocks—software, IT services, hardware, and semiconductors—all in one fund. The biggest tech companies take up the most space, but it also includes smaller tech names that many broader tech ETFs skip.
