XLC is a passive sector ETF built to track the S&P Communication Services Select Sector Index, giving market-cap-weighted exposure to Communication Services companies inside the S&P 500.
It uses a replication approach (generally holding nearly all index constituents in similar weights) and applies a cap so that, at quarterly rebalances, no single stock is allowed to exceed 25%.
The end result is a rules-based, S&P 500-only portfolio spanning telecom, media, entertainment, and interactive media & services.
You’re buying a basket of big U.S. communication and media companies from the S&P 500 in one trade. The biggest companies take up the most space in the basket, but there’s a rule that keeps any one stock from becoming more than about a quarter of the fund at reset points.
