XLE is a passive sector ETF built to track the S&P Energy Select Sector Index, giving you market-cap-weighted exposure to Energy companies inside the S&P 500. It uses a replication approach—typically holding nearly all index names in roughly the same weights—while applying concentration limits (no single stock above 25% at quarterly rebalance) to manage single-company dominance.
You own shares of big U.S. energy companies from the S&P 500, bundled into one fund. Because it’s market-cap weighted, the largest energy giants take up most of the portfolio.
