SPHY is a passive high-yield bond ETF designed to track the ICE BofA US High Yield Index, which represents USD-denominated corporate bonds rated below investment grade.
It uses a sampling approach—holding a representative slice of the index rather than every bond—to mimic the index’s risk/return profile.
The portfolio can span broad maturities (no built-in duration cap), and the underlying index is rebalanced monthly.
You’re buying a basket of “junk-rated” U.S. corporate bonds that pay higher interest because the issuers are riskier. The fund owns many bonds (or a close proxy) so you’re not betting on just one company’s ability to pay.
