HYG is a passive bond ETF built to mirror the iBoxx USD Liquid High Yield Index—an index of U.S. dollar high-yield (below investment-grade) corporate bonds that trade in the U.S. It uses a modified market-value weighting with a 3% cap per issuer, aiming to represent the most liquid slice of the junk bond market and track its benchmark closely.
You own a big basket of “junk-rated” corporate bonds from many companies, not company stocks. Those bonds pay interest, but the companies are riskier borrowers than investment-grade issuers.
