SILJ is a passive equity ETF built to track a basket of smaller (“junior”) silver mining, refining, and exploration companies globally. It follows an index that boosts the weight of “pure-play” silver businesses by adjusting company market caps based on how much revenue is tied to silver, then rebalances quarterly and refreshes the lineup semi-annually.
You’re buying shares of many small silver-mining and silver-exploration companies around the world, not physical silver bars. The fund owns stocks (or ADRs/GDRs) of these companies and weights the ones that are more “silver-focused” more heavily.
