VTI is a passive ETF built to mirror the CRSP US Total Market Index, aiming to capture essentially the entire investable U.S. stock market in one fund.
It uses market-cap weighting (bigger companies get bigger weights) and a sampling approach, meaning it holds a large, representative basket designed to behave like the full index.
The index is reviewed quarterly, and the fund targets close alignment to overall market characteristics like sector mix and valuation metrics.
You own small slices of thousands of U.S. companies—big, medium, small, and even micro-sized firms—bundled into one ETF. The biggest companies make up the largest part of what you own because the fund weights holdings by company size.
