SMH is a passive equity ETF built to mirror the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index by holding (at least) 80% of assets in the index’s constituents. It targets 25 of the largest U.S.-listed semiconductor and semiconductor equipment companies, selected by a blend of free-float market cap (shares actually available to trade) and trading liquidity, then weighted mostly by size with caps to limit extreme concentration.
You’re buying a basket of 25 U.S.-listed chipmakers and chip-equipment companies, all in one ticker. The fund mostly gives bigger companies bigger weight, so the giants tend to drive results.
